Shoulder Replacement

Shoulder replacement, also known as shoulder arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to replace the damaged parts of the shoulder joint with artificial components. This procedure is typically recommended for patients with severe shoulder pain and dysfunction that do not respond to non-surgical treatments. The common causes leading to shoulder replacement include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, severe fractures, or rotator cuff tear arthropathy.

There are different types of shoulder replacement surgeries:

1.Total Shoulder Replacement: This involves replacing both the ball (humeral head) and the socket (glenoid) of the shoulder joint with artificial components.

2.Partial Shoulder Replacement (Hemiarthroplasty): Only the ball of the shoulder joint is replaced.

3.Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement: The positions of the ball and socket are switched. This type is usually recommended for patients with severe rotator cuff damage.

The surgery aims to relieve pain, improve function, and enhance the quality of life. Recovery involves physical therapy and rehabilitation to regain strength and range of motion in the shoulder.
